Myopic Loss Aversion and Margin of Safety: the Risk of Value Investing

چکیده

This paper examines the risk of value investing from the point of view of a myopic loss-averse investor holding a diversified portfolio and relying on infrequent portfolio rebalancing. This closely resembles purchasing a large portfolio, such as those created by BARRA, and following a buy-and-hold investment strategy. In these circumstances, which portfolio, value or growth, is riskier to a myopic lossaverse investor? To facilitate analysis, a myopic loss ranking and a corresponding statistical procedure are developed and applied to investment-style data provided by BARRA. The paper qualifies the conditions under which value investing is more risky in North American financial markets.

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility

Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...

Risk Perceptions and Financial Decisions of Individual Investors

Myopic loss aversion was suggested by Benartzi and Thaler (1995) as the main explanation for the equity premium puzzle. We investigate the impact of myopic loss aversion on actual investment decisions of 400 Dutch individual investors, covered by the Dutch National Bank Household Survey. We find that higher loss aversion is associated with a lower share of investments in risky assets. The inves...

Risk Aversion or Myopia?

We study how decision makers choose when faced with multiple plays of a gamble or investment. When evaluating multiple plays of a simple mixed gamble, a chance to win x or lose y, subjects show a sensitivity to the amount to lose on a single trial, holding the distribution of returns for the portfolio constant; that is, they display “myopic loss aversion.” Many subjects who decline multiple pla...

Myopic Loss Aversion Revisited

In this paper we reexamine several experimental papers on myopic loss aversion by analyzing individual rather than aggregate choice patterns. We find that the behavior of the majority of subjects is inconsistent with the hypothesis of myopic loss aversion.

On Loss Aversion in Bimatrix Games

In this article three different types of loss aversion equilibria in bimatrix games are studied. Loss aversion equilibria are Nash equilibria of games where players are loss averse and where the reference points—points below which they consider payoffs to be losses— are endogenous to the equilibrium calculation. The first type is the fixed point loss aversion equilibrium, introduced in Shalev (...
